The defending Superbowl Champion New Orleans Saints enter this weekend's game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers with a chance to clinch the NFC South and homefield advantage throughout the playoffs if New Orleans wins and the Atlanta Falcons lose. But, as we all know, the Saints haven't always had such positive prospects going into the last week of the NFL regular season.
In 1980, the Saints lost 14 consecutive games. In fact, from a 1980 to 1986, the Saints failed to qualify for the playoffs and had 4 seasons with a total of 5 wins or less. After the 1980 season, the Saints were given the nickname "Aints", and the use of this name continued through their lack of success during the early to mid 1980's. Their fans would often attend the Saint's homegames with trash bags over their heads and signs that read "AINTS".
